Nicolás Maduro Back in Court Facing Torture Charges
Former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, along with his wife, Cilia Flores, will return to a federal court in New York on Thursday.

Former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, along with his wife, Cilia Flores, will return to a federal court in New York on Thursday. They face serious allegations in a revamped indictment that accuses them of orchestrating a state-sponsored campaign of torture against numerous victims, including three Americans.
Expected to plead not guilty, the couple is responding to charges incorporated into a drug trafficking case that dates back several months. Maduro, 63, was captured in January during a U.S. military operation at his residence in Caracas. His attorney, Barry Pollack, emphasized that Maduro denies the allegations and is eager to present his case in court. The indictment cites severe methods of torture overseen by Maduro, who is implicated in recommending torture techniques and personally monitoring the treatment of victims, while Flores is accused of contributing to the oppressive regime.
