Authorities are currently investigating after five individuals were spotted climbing out of a sewer on the Upper East Side just after 2 a.m. on Friday. According to the police, the group was seen emerging from a hole on East 82nd Street, located between York and East End Avenues. Following their exit, they drove away in a black Suburban, heading east on 82nd Street.
Investigators found tools at the scene but did not provide further details. This occurrence is part of a pattern, with similar incidents reported in recent months. Earlier, two men were arrested near East 61st Street for criminal trespassing, having climbed out of a manhole during the United Nations General Assembly. The NYPD suggests that this trend of ‘drain diving’ is generally not associated with criminal activity, as numerous reports indicate people entering the sewers after storms in search of valuables and scrap metal. The department maintains a strong response to these events and continues to monitor the situation.
