Concerns Rise Over Drug-Resistant Shigella Infection Linked to Sexual Activity

A gut infection caused by Shigella bacteria, which can be transmitted during sexual activity, is becoming more challenging to treat as antibiotic-resistant versions emerge. A report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlighted nearly 17,000 Shigella samples collected from 2011 to 2023, revealing that in 2023, 8.5% of samples classified as extensively drug-resistant (XDR) had no treatment options available, a significant increase from previous years.
Experts like Dr. Tyler Evans emphasize that while the bacteria are evolving and developing resistance, the rate of infections has not surged. The report indicates that a majority of XDR cases were found in adult men, often linked to sexual contact, particularly among men who have sex with men. Although Shigella has existed for decades, the current rise in resistant strains is alarming, prompting health professionals to advise caution without causing panic.
