NY will opt in Trump’s school choice program, Hochul says

On Friday, Governor Kathy Hochul stated that New York will participate in the school choice initiative introduced by the Trump administration. This decision comes amidst criticism from teachers unions, who argue that it may channel funds away from public schools. The program will allow New York taxpayers to receive tax credits for contributions to educational organizations that provide scholarships.

The program is designed to aid families with students in both public and private schools, though critics fear it may primarily benefit private institutions. Leaders of the state legislature and teachers unions had urged Hochul to withdraw from the program, but she justified her decision by asserting it could bring substantial financial support to education without compromising public school funding. The tax credits will be available beginning in January.
