This weekend, Comic Con attracts crowds of comic enthusiasts and cosplayers to the Jacob K. Javits Center, where New York City’s Department of Education maintains a prominent presence as one of the leading comic book publishers in the United States. Joe Schmidt, part of the social studies and civics team, emphasizes the effectiveness of comics in education, explaining, “Students really learn well from comics.”
Since launching their in-house comic publication in 2020, the department has produced 46 comics covering topics from historical events to issues like climate change and voting rights. The newly released “Know Your Rights” comic helps educate readers about immigration rights. With 6 million copies made available to public schools and online for free, education officials are thrilled to see engagement at Comic Con, where they continue to distribute materials and hold panel discussions throughout the event.
