An argument over President Donald Trump at an Ohio dog park escalated to a shooting incident, with legal experts suggesting possibility for self-defense claims from either individual involved. The case features Emmanuel “Mike” Mathews, 81, who is facing charges of felonious assault for allegedly shooting 55-year-old David Mattai on April 21 at Centerville Mills Park in Bainbridge Township, with Mathews pleading not guilty.
According to Michael Benza, a law professor at Case Western Reserve University, the central issue is whether either party has lost the right to claim self-defense due to their roles in instigating the confrontation. Notably, following a verbal disagreement about Trump, a physical altercation ensued, leading to the shooting. The outcome now rests with a jury, who will consider the subjective interpretations of fear and danger.
