Sally Yates' Cornell alleged gang rape review could scrutinize crucial police interview, attorney says

A significant police interview related to the alleged rape case at Cornell University is set to be examined by former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, who has been appointed by the university’s trustees. This review comes after local prosecutors stated that they did not fully receive the interview prior to opting not to file charges. In response to allegations from October 2024 regarding members of Chi Phi fraternity, Yates’ investigation seeks to assess the university’s handling of these claims following the outcomes of its internal inquiry, which led to some students facing expulsions and suspensions.

A woman, referred to in court documents as Jane Doe, stated during a November 2024 interview with Cornell Police, “I can say with 100% confidence I was raped,” as per a transcript acquired by CBS News. In contrast, Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten noted his office had reviewed a version of Doe’s statement that included assertions of voluntary participation and drug use. He highlighted that the complete interview could significantly alter the case’s context, and he indicated the necessity of examining the full recorded interviews to uncover potentially critical information.
