Bodega owners back effort to expand alcohol sales in New York City

In New York City, a rising coalition comprising bodega proprietors, grocery operators, and various business organizations is working to amend legislation that currently restricts the sale of wine and spirits to approximately 4,000 licensed liquor stores. Assemblymember Amanda Septimo joined representatives from these businesses on Wednesday to support changes to the law.

Proponents argue that the existing regulations are outdated, insisting that consumers should have the convenience of purchasing wine and liquor alongside groceries. Supporters believe this change could benefit small businesses, allowing them to flourish despite challenging economic conditions. Currently, bodegas are permitted to sell only beer, while opponents of the existing laws assert that it’s time to modernize rules rooted in Prohibition-era restrictions. The push for this proposal occurs amidst ongoing discussions in Albany regarding the state’s alcohol sales framework.
