A tornado struck the city of Marsala on the western coast of Sicily on Friday, leading to overturned cars and extensive damage to buildings, including a school. At least two individuals were reported to be seriously injured as a result of the storm. Dramatic footage revealed the tornado’s strong winds wreaking havoc across the area, with debris flying and vehicles being tossed aside.
In addition to the destruction in Marsala, nearby towns such as Petrosino and Mazara del Vallo also reported damage. Salvatore Cocina, head of Sicily’s Civil Protection agency, described the scene as reminiscent of ‘an American tornado,’ noting that such violent storms are unprecedented in the region’s recent history. Local officials are currently seeking funding to address the damages, particularly to the school, as the impact of climate change and extreme weather becomes increasingly evident.
