Experts Doubt Russian Diesel Pact Will Significantly Affect US Prices

A recently announced agreement for Russia to augment its diesel supply to the U.S.

Boosting US oil supplies with Russian diesel unlikely to have much impact on prices, experts say

A recently announced agreement for Russia to augment its diesel supply to the U.S. over the coming months is anticipated to have little to no impact on the already elevated prices at the pump, according to energy policy experts. President Donald Trump stated on Friday that he had reached a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to deliver more than 300,000 tons of diesel immediately, followed by an additional 500,000 tons in November and 4 million more tons later.

This agreement represents a significant policy shift for the U.S., which had imposed a ban on Russian oil imports since the onset of Russia’s war with Ukraine. Currently, the U.S. economy is grappling with rising global oil prices associated with a prolonged conflict in Iran. Diesel prices in the U.S. peaked at a record $6.53 per gallon on September 22, now averaging nearly $6.28 a gallon. Energy policy experts remain skeptical that this increase in supply will effectively lower prices, noting that it may merely redistribute existing supplies rather than generate new ones. Estimates suggest that there could be a slight local price decrease in certain areas, but overall stability in prices is expected as factors like Middle Eastern refining capacity disruptions continue to influence costs.
