NY Gov. Kathy Hochul, Bruce Blakeman spar over immigration, cost of living in debate

During a debate on Tuesday night, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Republican contender Bruce Blakeman engaged in a heated discussion about immigration policy, the influence of President Donald Trump, and the escalating cost of living. With Election Day approaching in three weeks, the 60-minute debate at Spectrum News NY1’s studios allowed both candidates to communicate directly with voters, although it lacked any major impactful moments.

Hochul, the Democrat in office, emphasized her achievements while criticizing Blakeman’s support for Trump multiple times. In response, Blakeman placed blame on Hochul for increasing gas and electric prices, asserting her immigration policies have made the state less safe. He pushed for change and decided not to fully associate Hochul with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, whom he has campaigned against. Throughout the debate, both candidates attempted to establish themselves as the better option to address affordability issues for New Yorkers.
