Karl-Anthony Towns, having transitioned from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the New York Knicks, has experienced personal and professional highs, including winning an NBA championship. However, he remains in a grief journey that began with the loss of his mother due to COVID-19 complications six years ago. Recently, he commemorated World Mental Health Day by discussing his emotional struggles at an event organized by Project Healthy Minds, shortly before the Knicks’ banner-raising celebration.
Reflecting on his experiences, Towns described a profound moment of calm he felt before the NBA Finals, harkening back to his youth when he would spot his mother in small crowds at games. He expressed that during those games, it felt like it was just him, his mother, and basketball. After her passing, he acknowledged losing his passion for the sport until he found support in wellness coach Arnie Kander, who helped him process his feelings. The nonprofit Project Healthy Minds aims to motivate others to seek mental health care, emphasizing the importance of being heard and understood.
