Union Square was heavily monitored on Wednesday evening as crowds gathered for a vigil commemorating the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, with Mayor Zohran Mamdani participating in the ceremony. Demonstrators displayed both Israeli and Palestinian flags while a significant police presence, including the NYPD’s counterterrorism unit, secured the area.
While Mamdani stood silently during the event as speakers addressed the crowd, his presence was met with mixed reactions, including booing from some attendees. Laura Liben, a participant, expressed surprise at the pro-Palestinian turnout and felt that it overshadowed the vigil’s original intent. Mamdani has received criticism for his remarks regarding the violence and conflict, particularly from the Anti-Defamation League, who accused him of politicizing the occasion rather than mourning alongside the Jewish community. His statements denouncing violence against civilians have also attracted backlash due to the sensitive ongoing tensions related to these events.
